Dermaplaning at Home: Should You Try It?

Yearning for smoother skin, a fresh canvas to absorb your favorite skincare potions? You lock eyes with those at-home Dermaplane razors, feeling a surge of confidence—after all, you’ve been shaving for eons. But wait, will this blade dance bring you closer to radiant skin?

There are vast differences between a professional Dermaplaning treatment and at-home Dermaplaning.  Let’s look at a few of them:

1. The blade-

Face razors or at-home tools have flexible blades designed specifically to cut

hair at the skin’s surface. Additionally, they feature notches to prevent the blade

from getting too close to the actual skin. If you press the blade harder in an

effort to achieve a smoother texture, it can lead to uneven skin, nicks, and ruts.

These factors make the skin more vulnerable to infection and other significant

skin concerns

2. The technique-

The optimal angle for shaving is typically 30-35 degrees. However, when it

comes to dermaplaning, a different approach is necessary. Dermaplaning

requires a precise 45-degree angle and very taut skin to align with the flat edge

of the blade. The initial 2-3 strokes effectively remove vellus hair, while

subsequent strokes meticulously ‘plane’ away dead skin cell buildup. It’s

essential to space out dermaplaning sessions by at least four weeks, allowing

the skin to harmonize with its natural growth cycle and maintain overall health

and integrity.

3. The contours-

Your skincare professional is trained to examine your facial structure and glide

the blade safely over the contours of your face. They can’t even dermaplane

their face. No one can hold their skin taut while angling the blade precisely and

stroking the blade properly.

Your skin is a complex organ, and unintentional damage could leave it vulnerable. How

you treat your skin will directly affect its appearance. Your esthetician will be able to

analyze your skin to know if this treatment will benefit you. They can also guide you in

how frequently to have this treatment done to maximize your results while keeping you

glowing. This treatment is best left to the pros when you want beautiful, safe results.
